Choosing a property to live in can be a mind-numbing task. If you are searching for a home, New Jersey offers a wide array of living arrangements. Below you will find a brief summary about different home types. Additionally, some information regarding commercial opportunities is also below.

Single Family

The single family is the backbone of the American home. A single family offers privacy, complete control over the layout and structure of your home. When you live in your own home - you can listen to music as loudly as you like - to an extent anyway, modify the room configuration of your house, paint as you like, change doors - you get the point. The home is yours. Unless you are modifying something that requires a permit - it's pretty much your decision. You should have some experience in basic home maintenance.

Multi-Family

A multi-family home offers some of the advantages of a single-family plus the ability to either collect rent to help pay your mortgage and build equity or perhaps to invite family to live with you (except a mother-in-law of course!). A multi-family can literally help pay your mortgage in half and for some - it's the only way to purchase a home. If you decide to rent out and become a landlord you need to be familiar with certain rules, such as tenancy-at-will and other real estate legalities - if not you should have a realtor help you with renting a unit. Being a landlord has responsibilities as well - you must maintain the home and provide basic utilities. It is recommended that you have some understanding of a home's basic utilities and maintenance.

Condo, Townhouse, and Co-Op

These types of units are often referred to as "stepping-stones", once popular only with singles - they are now widely available in multi-bedroom configurations. It isn't odd to see a whole family of four live in a condo. If you're a busy professional or just plain lazy, a condo offers significant advantages over a home. Usually owning one of these requires paying a monthly maintenance fee - this fee covers the cost of maintaining the building. Often a monthly maintenance fee will include utilities, taxes, snow & garbage removal, parking, and sometimes even luxury extras such as a doorman, pool, and even cable-tv.

Townhouses offers many of the same advantages of a condo but tend to mutli-floor whereas condo's are usually one floor. So if you have problems walking upstairs or are searching for a home for grandma, you may want to avoid these.

Typically, a Co-Op is usually a larger building such as a high-rise. When you purchase a Co-Op you are really purchasing shares of the company who owns the building. The amount of shares is usually equal to the square footage of your home. Large Co-Op buildings will sometimes have hotel like amenities such as pools, doormen, majestic lobbys, gyms, on-site services and of course parking. Monthly maintenance fees tend to be higher.

These types of homes are sometimes restrictive with pets and usually you are not allowed to make any major modifications to your home, such as painting the exterior of your unit or even adding layout changes. Painting is usually the most intense project in one of these units or changing an appliance, or adding new cabinets.

Commerical

New Jersey is a bustling commerce center. Having New York City miles away is also a major benefit. New Jersey has several high traffic areas such as Jersey City, Paramus, Newark, Morristown, North Brunswick, Edison, Clifton, Fort Lee, Montvale, Somerville, and several other areas.

New Jersey is rich with many pharmaceutical, high-tech, and consumer companies. New Jersey has also been consistently ranked very highly for education, providing an eligible and capable workforce.

In addition to large companies, you will find that New Jersey also has plenty of small town businesses - take a drive through Cliffside Park, Ridgewood, Montclair, Teaneck, Norwood, West New York, Hoboken, and many others.
